Monday Mettā
A new + beautiful way to experience Mondays
I have gratitude for myself. I have gratitude for all beings.
You are your most important person.
So often, we share our thanks for others, or for things that “happen to us,” without giving ourself the enormous appreciation we absolutely need to acknowledge. Today, practice saying that you’re thankful for yourself.
And since this is loving-friendliness, we also send our love out to all beings.
I have gratitude for myself, I have gratitude for all beings.
✨
So glad you’re here.

📚Rachel’s Recommendations
Life as Told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal by Juan José Millás & Juan Luis Arsuaga (trans. Thomas Bunstead, Daniel Hahn). Imagine a Carl Sagan-esque guy in a car with the Bill Bryson of Spain. Connections are made. History, philosophy, and science is explained. Human behavior is observed. And one of them is always hungry. Two of Spain’s leading thinkers explain where we come from and why we are the way we are. I loved it.
American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin by Terrance Hayes. A book of poetry written during in 2016 and 2017, with about 70 poems with the exact same name. I read the whole book in one sitting. I also got the chance to hear Terrance Hayes speak on a panel when I was at Aspen Words, and his philosophies on writing and living were something else! Great book, great poet.
Deer Man by Geoffroy Delorme and translated by Shaun Whiteside. I don’t know what it is with me and reading books about living in the wild (I’ve also started watching Alone, help!) but this one stunned me. Geoffroy is so compassionate and vivid in his descriptions of spending seven years living with roe deer in France. Yes, seven years. Roe deer. France. I can’t even.
Father of the Rain by Lily King. This one was a tough read and yet, I couldn’t put it down. Lily King’s main character is devoted to her parent who struggles with addiction and illnesses. I gasped out loud as she (the writer AND the protagonist) made certain choices throughout the narrative that I just couldn’t believe and yet understood. It’s a full-on book that made my heart grow in size.
🌕Full Moon🌕
September’s full moon will be in my constellation: Pisces. Get ready for all the emotions.
It’s called the Harvest Moon and is our last full moon of summer. The name “Harvest Moon” is given to the full moon that falls closest to the autumn equinox (sometimes this happens in October, and when it does, September’s full moon is called the Corn Moon. If you live where I live, the corn thing makes a whole lot of sense). This is a great time to “harvest” intentions.
The moon will be full on September 10th, early early morning for most of us in the Americas.

Your Tarot Reading, Revealed!
Card 1: Aventurine // Four of Cups
There’s actually something you have to say “no” to in order for your gamble to pay off. This is a meditation card, a reflective card, a card all about the subconscious (what’s below what you think you know about yourself). In the traditional deck, a figure sits under a tree with arms folded, stubborn, needing his alone time and refusing the gift of the fourth cup. Let that be your message: what do you need to let go of in order for your ideas and plans to come to fruition?
Card 2: Peach Quartz// The Devil
Don’t freak out!! Yes, this is an ironic card to get when you’re asking for positive vibes. You can tell I never plan this stuff—this would not have been my first choice of cards. However, there is something to be learned here. In the traditional deck, the two Adam/Eve figures below the devil are chained by their feet, but their arms are free. This card reminds us that we have a lot of control over our perspective and how we view a potentially draining or upsetting situation. I’m not talking about toxic positivity, but I am talking about raising your vibes by realizing you DO have control… over your own self, self-love, and self preservation.
Card 3: Thulite // Four of Wands
Your heart’s center this week comes from your creative passions and your dwelling space. This is your action item: do the things that make you feel creative (sometimes, I like to paint or sketch, being very bad at it, but loving the process) and spend time in your home, getting it ready for the change in seasons. This will make your heart swell with joy as you take pride in your creativity and your home ground.
✨intuitive tarot inspired by Sarah Greenman, who was in turn inspired by Chris Corsini, because inspiration is contagious✨
I loved the card I chose for the reading. I definitely need to open up my heart center and I’ve found myself so engrossed creatively recently. I will continue leaning into it. I hope to slowly find things that inspire me to be creative and decorate my space. Thank you for this opportunity to gain insight and be reflective :)
