Monday Mettā
a new + beautiful way to experience Mondays
May I learn to identify and see the sources of anger, craving, and delusion in myself.
May [insert someone you love without restraint] learn to identify and see the sources of anger, craving, and delusion in themselves.
May [insert someone you have neutral feelings for] learn to identify and see the sources of anger, craving, and delusion in themselves.
May [insert someone you struggle with] learn to identify and see the sources of anger, craving, and delusion in themselves.
May all beings learn to identify and see the sources of anger, craving, and delusion in themselves.
These words, or this prayer, is attributed to Thich Nhat Hanh, and is the sixth line of his Nine Prayers. This line is causal: the sources of anger, craving, and delusion are what cloud us from viewing ourselves with compassionate loving-kindness. By identifying the sources of our suffering, we can begin to hold them tenderly, looking upon them with curiosity and not judgement, and with the understanding that like any thought or feeling, they will pass.
As you meditate on these words, start with yourself— the importance of self-loving-kindness is vital. Then, send mettā out to others. Begin with someone you deeply love, with no complications. Move to someone you simply know, with no expectations. Then send these words to someone you struggle with, imagining them with love. Finally, send out these words to the planet.
The Nine Prayers
May I be peaceful, happy, and light in body and spirit.
May I be free from injury. May I live in safety.
May I be free from disturbance, fear, and anxiety.
May I learn to look at myself with the eyes of understanding and of love.
May I be able to recognize and touch the seeds of joy and happiness in myself.
May I learn to identify and see the sources of anger, craving, and delusion in myself.
May I know how to nourish the seeds of joy in myself every day.
May I be able to live fresh, solid and free.
May I be free from attachment and aversion, but not be indifferent.

🌗 New Moon and May Day 🌗
April 30th brings the New Moon, and May 1st is Beltane (May Day)! 🌷It feels like we were just celebrating the beginning of Spring, but May Day gently ushers in the summer season.
Throughout Europe, there are many different folklores and celebrations associated with Beltane, including using ritual bonfires to ward off misfortune. In fact, the Gaelic spelling of Bealtaine means “mouth of fire.” I always suggest a New Moon fire ritual, lighting a small candle for the duration of the day and even burning small notes with your fears or worries on them. The eve of May Day brings the newness of the next moon cycle. Let whatever flame you light bring a little May magic into your home.
*some information here was gathered from Taproot and Sarah Robinson’s article about May Day.

Your Tarot Reading, Revealed!
Card 1: Lacy agate // Strength
A tender card for a tender time, reminding you of your own strength and that you can trust the strength of those around you. Whatever you’re going through now gives you a chance to practice treating yourself with grace and compassion. This card reminds us that everything is fleeting and also happening all at once (notice the infinity symbol above her head). Gather your courage, which, as the lion in The Wizard of Oz reminds us, has been inside of you all along.
Card 2: Picture jasper // Three of Cups
Think back on a time when you felt the most fruitful, the most joyful. Who was around you then? How were you behaving? What were you celebrating? The beautiful connections you’ve made in the past might be worth looking into again. You can never recreate past experiences, but you can bring past relationships and perspectives up to the present moment. Pinpoint hobbies, activities, or friendships that used to delight you and take them up again.
Card 3: Lapis lazuli // The Fool
This card is clearly telling you to get started on that bright idea! Plunge forth, and don’t think too hard. Begin an adventure, however small, bursting forward with confidence, wonder, and a little foolishness. All established ideas were new, once, and foolish. Don’t be afraid to get a little silly with your next moves, and trust your gut. If you wanted the go-ahead, this is it!
✨intuitive tarot inspired by Sarah Greenman, who was in turn inspired by Chris Corsini, because inspiration is contagious✨
This week’s cards tell me to trust my instincts! I first chose the Lacy agate, but then I thought I really liked the Lapis Lazuli. Turns out Lacy Agate was right as I am sharing some difficult news with my students this week. Trust, courage, strength from within are all important for me right now! Thanks Rachel for this wonderful newsletter!
