Monday Mettā
A new + beautiful way to experience Mondays.
May I release old fears. May I travel forward with renewed courage. May all beings find peace. May all beings find belonging.
I’ve been thinking, lately, about peace, belonging, and courage. In this Mettā, I’m asking you to start with yourself first, to give yourself a release of old fears and the renewal of courage.
Then pause, and take a few breaths.
You don’t know the fear of others, although I’m fairly certain we all have many of the same core fears. But without making those assumptions, send your loving-kindness to all beings. May they find peace. May they find belonging.
Peace + belonging, to help with fear and courage. May we all find courage and peace in this New Year.
So glad you’re here.

A Thank You.
I am so filled with gratitude for the love, connection, and spirit in the “room” on Saturday. Thank you so much to all who came to my New Year’s Day retreat, signing on despite ice storms, no wifi, and pens in noses (you know who you are), or with the help of spouses/family members taking over so you could have the day. We breathed together, sent loving-kindness out to the planet, moved and stretched, shared our griefs and joys, trusted our intuition, and listened to good words.
To those who couldn’t make it and instead sent texts, emails, and notes of support, encouragement, and New Year’s wishes, thank you. I don’t think I’ll ever feel comfortable putting myself out there in this way, but your kindness and love made the vulnerability feel better.
A few mentions and source siting:
In the Journal + Reflect workshop, I used an excerpt from the “Creation” chapter of Sherri Mitchell’s book, Sacred Instructions. I asked folks to reflect on the seeds they are or will be growing in the upcoming months, and the tone with which they will be cultivating those seeds.
We are part of a uni-verse, a collection of individual notes in one continuous song; the song that sang all life into being. This song is the drone of the musical universe. It is the foundation upon which all structure is built. If we listen closely, e can hear this creation song echoing in our bones. It exists in a vibrational frequency that emanates throughout the entire universe and resonates deep within us. This tone is the voice of creation; the voice that first spoke and brought all life into form. Each individual soul carries its own unique vibrational tone that is built upon that universal tone, and that individualized tone carries the seed of that being’s life path. When that seed is planted, even before the first shoot comes up through the ground, the vibration of that tone exists within it. This tone sets the rhythm for the new life that is being cultivated; it is that individual beings creation song. p. 5
Also in the Journal + Reflect workshop, I used Mary Oliver’s poem We Shake with Joy. “We shake with joy, we shake with grief. What a time they have, these two, housed as they are in the same body.” I thank Lara Tupper for inspiring me to read Mary Oliver on each New Year’s day. I asked folks to reflect on an experience of grief this past year, and to reflect on an upcoming experience of joy in the year 2022, as if it had already happened.
In the Intuitive Tarot workshop, I used The Star Tarot deck by Cathy McClelland, whose carefully researched symbolism helped us reflect and connect with who we are and what our potential is. I was inspired to do this reading by Sarah Greenman.
In the Meditation + Movement class, I read the poem Start Close In by David Whyte and was inspired by David Whyte’s series on the Waking Up app:
Start close in,
don’t take the second step
or the third,
start with the first
thing
close in,
the step
you don’t want to take.Start with
the ground
you know,
the pale ground
beneath your feet,
your own
way to begin
the conversation.Start with your own
question,
give up on other
people’s questions,
don’t let them
smother something
simple.To hear
another’s voice,
follow
your own voice,
wait until
that voicebecomes an
intimate
private ear
that can
really listen
to another.
Start right now
take a small step
you can call your own
don’t follow
someone else’s
heroics, be humble
and focused,
start close in,
don’t mistake
that other
for your own.Start close in,
don’t take
the second step
or the third,
start with the first
thing
close in,
the step
you don’t want to take.

Your Tarot Reading, Revealed!
Card 1: Angelite // Nine of Cups. Get ready to get what you wish for! You might be feeling anxious and insecure, but let this message from the Nine of Cups reach you and calm you. This card represents great happiness, abundance, and giving out what you want to receive. In fact, that’s the key here. If you are feeling a lack of grace, compassion, stability, or love, gather your inner resources and give those gifts out to others. Even if you are struggling or in pain, you have love to give, and a wealth of wisdom for others possibly experiencing the same feelings. Oh, and one more thing! Emulate this card by sitting quietly, letting today’s Mettā, or any other loving-kindness mantra, wash over you. Say it over and over. You are loved, you are love.
Card 2: Rose Quartz // Five of Cups. This card’s key phrase is “emotional strength,” which is what you must lean on this week. Your relationships are going through a transformation, which may feel disappointing, frustrating, or downright painful. But, with every transformation, there is an opportunity to heal and connect. And, this card is all about perspective. You can choose to focus on the three fallen cups, each pouring out loss, sadness, and disappointment, or you can shift your perspective to the two cups behind the figure, bursting with color, transformation (butterflies always symbolize transformation) and completion (the rainbow). Here comes the work of trusting your heart, your center of feeling and emotion, and finding perspective.
Card 3: Blue Lace Agate // (12) The Hanged One. One of the most beautiful in the bunch, The Hanged One is reminding you to look at your words and communications from a different lens. It is your responsibility, now, to choose introspection, to become the introvert in an extroverted world. Take a break from mass communication (including social media and your news apps) and take some time to discover what you want to say, and how you want to say it. Before sending that email, imagine it coming from a place of balance, integrity, clarity. Then, re-word it if necessary! Do the same with your other forms of communication, even in conversation.
